Evaluation

Initially I responded positively to the brief but as the days progressed I felt that time was slipping out of my hands although I did complete all the requirements I felt by having more time on hand this project could have had a so much better outcome as I was full of ideas that I wanted to progress onwards.
The theme for this project was ‘journey’ and from the little trips I took to the park, walk to college and so forth I realized by looking through the pictures that was taken I was drawn to the organic arch shapes due to its elegance it caught my attention so I took it from there and produced a few sketches and it just went from there that my ideas progressed further.

Overall the time was well managed being a short project time was not really on our side but I tried my up most best to produce a verity of samples. The technique I enjoyed the most was mono printing which was something that was new to me fairly straight forward that left me with a great finish. Initially I hadn’t thought of doing screen printing and mono printing together but these two techniques went very good together and felt as though they complemented one another.

The inspiration for my ideas came from pictures I took a lot came from various ancient catalogue. I looked into a few artists the main being William Morris I also looked into the art movement of art nouveau as I felt that it had similar use of style and it related to the work I was doing.
The few problems I encountered was whilst doing the mono printing I used the lino ink which smudged a few places which left me with a few stains I solved this problem however much I could by layering that area with some screen printing.
Overall I could have developed my work further by using silk instead of cotton as the motif would have fit so well on silk giving it a bit of a shimmer and a good finished look. I could see it as a fashion piece maybe a Chinese kimono or it could even look great as a pair of curtains

Artist William Morris

William Morris was born in Walthamstow, Essex, in the year 1834. Was an english textile designer he had a great passion for artand hes work reflects that. hes patterns have been popular since the end of the 19 century. Hes work was very influenced by architecture. hes use of style is very organic

Research

Art Nouveau
Art Nouveau was a popular art movement from around 1880 to 1915. Characterized by stylized natural forms such as leaves, flowers and so forth something I felt related well with my work due to its pure elegance and its use of style. Some images are as follows:

After looking into this art movement i came across the artist William Morris

Journey (final outcome)

Method: First and foremost this 1 meter length of cotton fabric was stained in golden colour coffee it didn’t come out as dark as I wanted however I feel by using  calico I might have had a greater finish in terms of the background
2. Then by drawing my motif on to the fabric I used the technique mono printing which was basically fairly simple it consisted of getting a piece of metal you can also use paper wallet if no access then rolling on some black lino ink covering the metal completely then depending of what style you want you can use different tools in this case I used the end of a paint brush and transferred the motif on to the fabric

4. Continuing with the screen I masked off the area I didn’t want to include this time using gold it was a hard process  as it was extremely difficult in lining them  together

3. Then by using the screen I initially made a sketch of which was then transferred on to the screen by Andy the technician. I used black as I felt it gave more of a ancient elegant finish. I placed the screen on top of the mono printing I did earlier and layering it making frames

4. Then by doing some free had painting I used a bit of gold and painted in and around the motif giving it a more of an enhanced finish

Getting Started

Research that i gathered by taking a few trips to the park ,from and to college and so forth

leaves that somewhat look like they are polluted

Journey (moodboard)

This is the mood board i made which showcases the  research  i compiled
I brushed the background with some golden coffee grounds  which  i then added a bit of gold to to give it a bit of a shimmer as its visible my mood board consists of loads of frames that varies in scale this idea something i will be taking and using for my final piece

This mood board will hold a great influence on my  final  outcome
